Reading dogs.

I saw an interesting article on the BBC news site today about using dogs to help British primary school children to learn to read. Apparently it works because the children do not feel criticized by the dogs. The idea was piloted in public libraries before taking the dogs into schools!

I'd like to share Common Craft productions latest video with you. It's about Augmented Reality.
I must admit, I experienced a little " Augmented Reality" on the train to Zoetermeer-Oost last Wednesday. A screen in my compartment told me the speed at which I was traveling, the temperature inside the carriage, the temperature outside and my expected time of arrival in Voorburg!
I wanted to copy Lee lefever's video to my blog but have had to make do with a link instead.

Using Twitter

In response to Elly's latest post about twitter I'm posting a link to an American blog I sometimes read, Librarian in Black. I remembered reading a while ago her advice to use Twitter's advanced search to see who has been twittering about your library and then target them in some way. I couldn't find that post so I'm posting a link about Online marketing in Public libraries in which she mentions Twitter .With regard to all the other marketing strategies, we may be doing a lot of what she suggests already.

Laptopnomaden en Kantoorzwervers.

I recently sent this blog post from the LibraryLingo blog to Elly as it also refers to the phenomenon "Kantoorzwervers" and their place in the library.

Kantoorzwervers in de bibliotheek

Ik hoop dat bibliotheken snel weer een ander project vinden als ze klaar zijn met het onvermijdbare 'retailconcept'. Ik heb daarvoor namelijk een voorstel; werkplek voor de thuiswerker, zzp'er of de 'kantoorzwerver'. Dat laatste woord heb ik uit een artikel in de Volkskrant van vandaag ( 06-01-2010, blz 12/13). Kantoorzwervers zijn mobiele werkers die druk bezig zijn met het Nieuwe Werken, immer bereikbaar en immer mobiel, die toch regelmatig een plek nodig hebben om te zitten en hun laptop uit te klappen. In het Volkskrantartikel wordt de Openbare Bibliotheek Amsterdam aangevoerd als voorbeeld van zo'n plek waar dat kan en op grote schaal ook gebeurt. 'Iedereen is er zijn mobiele kantoor aan het installeren. De laptop wordt opengeklapt, het bekertje koffie verkeerd dampt naast de smartphone. Er is een stopcontact veroverd' .

Voilá, waarom zouden bibliotheken nog verder zoeken naar hun rol en functie in de 21e eeuw. Hier wordt die op een presenteerblaadje aangeboden. Ik had er zelf ook al eens eerder over geschreven, maar nu zegt de Volkskrant het ook: de bibliotheek is een mooie alternatieve kantoorplek, nou ja, de OBA dus. Er is een tekort aan vrij toegankelijke openbare ruimtes, aan 'derde plekken'. Dit is de soort ruimte die geen kantoor is -tweede plek- en geen woning -eerste plek. Dat de OBA een echte verblijfsbibliotheek is wisten we natuurlijk al, maar het is onzin om te denken dat dit vooral een grootstedelijk gebeuren zou zijn en niet vertaald zou kunnen worden naar kleinere bibliotheken. In elk dorp en vinexlokatie wonen mensen die aan zo'n derde plek behoefte hebben. Juist daar is Grand Cafe-achtige horeca, die ook handig is om ongestoord mobiel te werken maar beperkt aanwezig en zijn er ook geen bedrijfsverzamelgebouwen. En telewerken vanuit de lokale bieb is eigenlijk een betere optie dan thuis blijven. Er komen sowieso steeds meer zzp'ers en/of nieuwe werkers en/of telewerkers bij; de werkgelegenheidsgroei in éénmansbedrijven is groter dan in de loondienstsector. Kansen genoeg voor de bieb om eens met een serieus gat in de markt aan de slag te gaan.

Bibliotheken hadden natuurlijk altijd al een leeszaal die de laatste jaren meestal is omgebouwd tot een prachtige coffeecorner/ontmoetingsruimte maar dit is weer een nieuwe dimensie, voor een nieuwe tijd en nieuwe werkers die vraagt om een nieuwe doelgroepbenadering. Een gerevitaliseerde leeszaal, maar dan met espresso-apparaat, ruim voorzien van stopcontacten en WiFi en zitplaatsen die een beetje privacy bieden. Hoeft volgens mij helemaal niet veel te kosten, beetje herinrichtingskosten, langere en aaneengesloten openingstijden misschien, promotiekosten, maar dan haal je ook een hele nieuwe doelgroep binnen en dat is wel wat waard.

Then and Now!!

If you have 15 minutes to spare I can recommend that you watch these two videos taken from the Ning Library 2.0 website. They illustrate just how much our profession has changed in a short period of time. I think the Arhus public library film is fantastic but imagine the funding needed for such a project.

I wonder if this might be an option for our young readers? I don't know how difficult it is to master the technology needed to make the videos. For my course in Maassluis I had to write about a Dutch author (I chose Elisabeth Mollema) and include reviews of her books. It was very difficult to find reviews for her children's books written by children and I made the suggestion that it may encourage children to review books if they could speak about books instead of write about them. Certainly children with dyslexia would benefit from this.
I like the way the children have been animated by their own drawings and yet been made more anonymous (privacy and safety) by not being filmed.

The Espresso Book Machine

The Espresso Book Machine, launched in 2009, offers a print-side answer to some of e-books' many advantages. Through a new partnership with Xerox that improves both the technology and its distribution possibilities, it may soon be clear whether or not the concept takes off.

The Espresso Book Machine makes "library quality paperbacks" from digital files by connecting to a network of 3.3 million titles obtained with publishers' approval. Content owners retain full rights and control of their digital files. With the help of Xerox technology, the resulting Version 2.0 produces a 300-page book in less than four minutes and at a cost of less than one cent per page.

According to creator OnDemandBooks, "What Gutenberg's press did for Europe in the 15th century, digitization and the Espresso Book Machine will do for the world tomorrow."

The EBM presents an intriguing alternative to e-reading for those who prefer a physical book. From the reader's prospective, it grants quick access to a wide range of titles. On the author's side, the EBM - and technology like it - could offer competition in the growing area of self-publishing, a field where digital technology is increasingly replacing print-on-demand solutions.

OnDemand says it expects the Espresso Book Machine to be valuable for educational institutions and libraries, public libraries, and bookstores, and in self-publishing and multilingual environments. The company is now rolling out the 2.0 in North America and expects to have 80 machines in place by the end of 2011.

I've just read about an alternative for the e book. Accompanying the article was a video which I've placed here. Unfortunately it's in English but I hope that will not put people off viewing it. Perhaps it's something we can use in the children's library.
